What yard weed/fungi has a black tip that comes off when you walk through it? It is like a powder.?

Question:It is growing in my yard and it is very aggravating. You cannot walk through the yard without your legs and feet turning black. I live in the Southeastern region (Alabama).

There are a few fungi that do that--the most common is shotgun fungus. The black from this fungus is very hard to remove. The other is sooty mildew and it's fairly eary to just rinse off. Fortunately neither one really harms the lawn and unfortunately there are no fungicides that are very effective on them. Usually changing weather conditions as the summer progresses will knock them out. Summers are usually drier that spring so they normally disappear since most lawn fungi like it damp and cool.
