How do you lay a cobblestone path?

Question:i've got bags of black round cobbles, and an area of garden which needs a path. do i really need to dig down, put in hardcore and concrete etc.?
or is there an easier method ?

Answers:
Dig out two or three inches of pathway until you have good solid earth, lay out your cobbles as you want them, pour over a dry mix of sand and cement until at least half the depth of the cobbles (a bit more would be better), leave for a few days.
The dry mix will soak up moisture from the earth and set solid. This should be enough for a garden path.
If there is any cracking later on, simply pour more dry mix over it. You may want to add some colour to the cement to make in blend in better with the cobbles

you need to dig down a couple inches past the depth of the cobblestones, add a layer of sand, smooth the sand, lay your cobblestones, then add your grout or filler between the stones. The sand will help keep any shifting of the earth from disrupting your path and keep it level and even, if you dont do a layer of sand then your path will end up uneven.
