Build a Planter Box?
Question:I want to build a planter box with landscape timbers. I'm thinking 8 feet long, 3 feet wide and 4 timbers high. Can I simply nail everything together into a box shape and set it on the ground and fill with dirt? The box will probably hold a small tree, and various small shrubs and flowers.
Answers:
That sounds about right. It is how I built my raised beds.
A word of advice though, use L-brackets and/or hinges instead of nails, to hold the sides together. I noticed that the rains expanded the wood so much that it popped out nails in many of my boxes. I'll have to fix them with brackets this fall..
And yes, I do leave the bottom of the boxes open.
The young lady has a good idea about leaving the bottoms open, meaning no bottom at all for something that big.
You need good drainage. A box would keep to much water in when it rains and being raised like it would tend to dry out quicker. If its to be smaller on on a deck or something than put a bottom on it but makes tons of holes so water can escape.
And remember to water it on dry spells or your plants will die.
