Azalias. What do red/brown lowest leaves mean, if the top leaves are nice and dark green?
Question:I think it is getting plenty of water, but maybe too much? I just fertilized them today, so I don't know if that is what is causing the lowest leaves to be bright red/brown.
Answers:
Yellow= too much ; Brown = too little.
After you water , go back later (1/2 hr + ) and poke into the soil , to see how far down, and where the water went . Probably not enough , especially if it's a fairly new plant . Once dry , it takes more to get it wet , especially if it was in a peat-based mix .
If it is dry , put a hose on it ( at soil level ) , with a pencil-width or less , of water coming out . Leave it for at least an hour . Watering this way might take longer per session, but it gets the job done , and you won't have to do it as often as with a lesser amount .
Another possibility : Was this a holiday plant , from this year ? If so the leaves that were on it, inside the greenhouse, will tend die off after it has been out awhile . In which case, nothing to worry about . Even if you think this it , check the water . If I had a dollar , for every dead & dying plant whose owner was sure that it had " plenty of water" , I could retire. ;D
the tree is growing , but you are watering the tree too much water the tree twice a week
If they are established plants, they don't need fertilized. They do require an acidic soil (pH5.5-6), moist -not wet- soil, good drainage, and plenty of mulch.
Quit fertilizing and watering as often and see if that helps.
