What material do i use to build my patio?
Question:i have a 8x 10 peice of my yard that i would like to put a patio on. the only problem is that it retains water no matter which way i slope it. if its level or sloped either way it holds water. what should i do about the water and what material should i use to build my pation i was thinking either concrete or paver. your suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Answers:
If water is present either way it's sloped, would need to install a drain before you do the concrete or pavers, or build an elevated deck (even 6 inches) above the problem area (but you still have to direct the water away do it does not become "standing water". Standing water attacks mosquito's.
If your not experienced in any of the three, hire a reputable contractor (with references you actually check). All three require experience to be done properly. Paver's sound simple, but their a nightmare if you don't do the work on a daily basis. I did my own deckwork and it came out perfect. I tried pavers and succeeded, but their not perfect. Concrete, I leave to those that do it for a living.
There is another option if you are wanting it to be ground level rather than a raised deck. There are some permeable pavers that are interlocking but have holes in them to let water percolate through. If you create the base correctly it should create somewhere for the water to go. The base should be at least 4 inches of compacted crushed rock and at least one inch of sand. The sand is really to level your pavers but it will help move the water.
