Answers:
When you have a stump of an apple tree, you'll eventually be faced with lots of "suckers" emerging from the roots. To completely kill the stump roots and all, I'd recommend applying "Triclopyr". Triclopyr is the active ingredient found in "Bayer Advanced Brush & Shrub Killer" or "Ortho Brush-B-Gone". Both can be found at most hardware/garden shops.

Rather than spray, you should drill some large holes into the stump (making sure you see greenwood). Immediately fill the holes with a mixture of 1 part Triclopyr + 3 parts water. This mixture will be absorbed into the stump and be translocated down to the roots where it will kill the roots. Within 10 days, the roots will begin to die. IF you happen to see any regrowth, spray them with the rates stated on the label.

Any leftover product can be used to control the broadleaved weeds on your lawn. Triclopyr is very effective on all hard-to-kill broad-leaved brush and vine species but won't harm turf.

Once the stump is killed, you can dig up the roots much easier within several months or simply leave it in the soil so the soil microorganisms and insects will break it down over time.

GOOD LUCK!

You will have to get a tree surgeon in to grind the stump out, not sure how much it will cost.

I have one in my garden, let me know how you get rid of yours, and how much it costs, please.

xx
this will take a little time but easy.

Take a drill bit buy an 18" bit and home store drill as many holes as you can from the top fill with rock salt water in the salt will break down the wood and it will break right apart you can dig around the stump and place some salt around it to
The old method was 2ozs of gelegnite way under the side, however I dont think this is possible. Garden centres sell chemical which accellerates rotting cost about a £5
I removed two apple trees and couldnt afford a stump grinder from my local rental place. I bought a wood bit for my drill and spent a couple of hours drilling the stump to below ground level. Then I covered it with dirt and grass seed. Now I mow over the the area and it looks like the rest of my yard. Termites will finish it off or it will rot away over time.
in my country we dig around it as deep as we can and pour on diesel then bleach to kill the roots then you can dig it out with a hoe. its hard but it how we do it.
Nah, man...
You can do it like the old timers did it.

Whittle you out a hole in the trunk and pour it full of salt, just the trunk, not the ground.
It'll finish decaying and you can just pull it out, with a rope and tractor.

Or just leave it to nature and it'll eventually be light enough you can pull it out yourself. however, you may have to do a bit of chopping to some of the larger roots.
you can do what did to my 6 stumps, dig all around them ,dig out from under them what you can , chop the roots that go out from the stump , run a chain around and under it , hook to a pickup and pull . my stumps came right out. the biggest one was 31/2 feet across. you might have to chop a few more roots with stump pulled tight.
