What are some unique environmentally friendly methods for gardening (I've already eliminated all chemicals)?

Question:For gardeners who have already eliminated use of synthetic chemicals and pesticides, what are some other good ideas that can be used to make gardens more eco-friendly?

Answers:
1. I am slowly eliminating my grass lawn.
2. I am replacing the lawn with native annuals and perennials.
3. I am installing brick and stone (reused from my mother's farm) walking paths.
4. I compost.
5. I collect and water with rainwater.
6. When my rainwater runs out, I use a well.
7. I recycle. My husband and I started a recycling center in our town of 10,000 people last year. The town had NEVER had a recycling center.
8. I encourage friends and neighbors to do all of the above!

Starting a compost heap and putting all of your organic yard and house waste into it keeps a lot of material out of landfills.

Use recycled materials to build enclosures for your compost piles rather than buying plastic containers.

Mulching your garden to reduce water consumption.

These are just some ideas right off the top of my head.

Good Luck and Happy Gardening from Cathy and Neal!
"Mycoscaping",is gardening with mushrooms and other beneficial fungi. Myceliel Runnings by Paul Stamets gives all the info. Even if you don't like to eat mushrooms, many form symbiotic relationships with green plants. I've found these to be much more beneficial than companion planting. RScott
Look into veggies, plants, flowers, etc, which are resistent to bugs and diseases in your particular area.
If flower gardening or landscaping is your interest look into native plants that are naturally adapted to your climate, thus using less water(and work!) to keep alive.
Heirloom varieties of veggies are often more resistent to disease and bugs than hybrids, my heirloom tomatoes have never been attacked by anything other than an Eastern box turtle, which was okay, I'm sure the turtle ate it's share of bugs, too! Besides, it was cute.
I am back to nature as if in the past...I bury my biodegradable kitchen waste around my banana, sugarcane plants, etc. They grew well without our modern days chemicals.
