What's detasseling?

Question:what do you do? please be nice.

Answers:
Not sure what the context of the question is, but the only detassling I know of is used to create different hybrids of corn.

When the stalks grow large and the plant sprouts tassels (on the very top) you would manually break the tassel off. The tassel is where the corn plant creates it's pollen. By removing it you take away it's mechanism of creating kernels inside the ears that sprout out on the mid-section of the plant.

You would then bring in pollen from a different variety of corn plant and pollinate the silk on the ears of the detasseled corn. This is how two different varieties of corn are essentially merged to become one new 'hybrid' variety.

It can take years of research and trial & error to create a successful new hybrid.

Not something you probably need or want to get into unless you're interested in plant science or just want to give it a try.

Hope that helps.
