What will grow from seeds in michigan?
Question:i want to start a plant from seeds. preferably something that can stay in pots. but it has to be able to stand the crazy weather of michigan. my brother has a lemon tree that grew from seeds. i thought of apples. what would be best?
Answers:
Apple, peach, apricot, & cherry trees all do well in Michigan but it takes a long time from the seed or pit until you harvest any fruit. Herbs do well in pots and can be grown from seed. If you're going to keep the pot inside, try an avacado. For outside, I'd wait a bit and then plant quick growing crops like lettuce, spinach & sugar pod peas that will mature before frost or that you can take inside when the temperatures plummet. If you start next spring, tomatoes will do well in a pot. Michigan weather is crazy, isn't it?
Apples grow very well in Michigan, probably much better than a lemon tree. That being said, neither of these is great in a pot. I'd try tomatos if you want them in a pot (although this is the wrong time of year to start growing them right now). Good luck.
Go to the Michigan State web site and find the college of agriculture. They will point you in the right direction but be more specific than you are here. Plants always indoors? Maximum size? Lighting in the room, etc...
