When it rains, my pond water becomes murky. How can I prevent this?
Question:my water gets dirty whenever it rains. this is a problem. other than that it is usually clean. is this unpreventable?
Answers:
not much you can do, anythign that stirs the water is going to bring the dirt fromt he bottom of the pond up...if you have any kind of bottom feeder fish get them out, they stir up all the sediment and nutrients that sit down there. if you can fill the bottom up with rocks it will help keep things down but its not a gaurantee
COVER THE POND
I thought ponds were supposed to be murky... does it not wear off when the particles settle again because it sounds natural...
Maybe you should put a tarp over it so that the rain doesn't stir up the water.
What sort of pond are you talking about.? Rain water is going to carry silt ,sand, mud, debris, into a pond if there is no drian tile to prevent this. It would also prevent water from moving into the pond unless it is spring fed. If you are talking about a small water element of a garden sort, use drain tile to prevent this and add water as needed. If we are talking about a farm pond or fishing pond , be glad you have water in it at all, it is a seasonal or temporary issue.
Also, take a good look at your banks. Are they bare?. If so, ask your extension agent about good cover crops for your area,. That should reduce the erosion adding to this trouble.
I am thinking that you might be talking about a small man-made fish type pond?? If so it is getting murky because you need to bank the edges with the liner higher than the surrounding soil. The liner is then covered with rocks so it doesn't show but the water can not run into the pond bringing in the soil.
