Is it OK to put down weed killer around a well established Maple Tree?

Question:Could it affect the health of the tree? We are NOT concerned about anything around the tree - There are no flowers or anything now (maybe next year). We want to put down mulch after around the tree after.

Answers:
When you say "put down", I assume you mean a liquid herbicide from a spray tank application? If this is the case, the only thing you need to be careful of is the type of herbicide you are using. Not all "just" weed killer herbicides have a non-residual effect, meaning they will "breakdown" readily when coming into contact with soil microbes. They linger in the soil for a long time. These types "may" harm the tree, when the roots come into contact with the herbicide that has leeched down to the root zone. The best non-selective herbicide is one that Iam sure you already know of. It's called "roundup". The ingredients of this herbicide breakdown almost immediately when contacting the soil. So much, that you can virtually plant flowers or lay sod a couple days after applying to an area. You are not going to "soak" the area I assume, so this will do just fine for what you need it to do, without harming your maple tree. I have used Roundup to spray "tree wells" thousands of times without loosing a single tree.. Hope this answers your question...

yes as long as the product is just for weeds in grass.
Yep, as long as it's weed killer ONLY. Extra stuff could harm your tree!
yes
Round-Up works through the leaves of plants, it's actually beneficial once it hits the soil, turning to carbon. It's tough getting rid of grass though & will take a few applications, clean up the dead & re-spray. Follow the instructions.
Please don't.

Put a tarp, some thich piles of newspaper, or anything else that will kill the weeds without using pesticides. Remove the material when all weeds are gone, and mulch or fill with pebbles to prevent them from returning
Glyphosate roundup would be the safest way to kill vegetation under any desirable tree. Using a brush paint the weeds with the weed killer that way you will not get any on the tree. Roundup will become inactive when in contact with the soil.
