I cut all poplar trees, stump grinded but roots in the ground are growing stuff again.anything can be done?

Question:Hello,

I had 12 poplar trees in my backyard. couple of of months ago, I got them cut and stump grinded. Roots were left underground with assumption that they will die. I noticed that roots are growing stuff all over. anything i can do to stop this?

Answers:
Poplars are very hardy, as you have found out. The timing of the cutting determines how much stump sprouting you will get and how successful it will be. If you want to discourage stump sprouting, wait until the leaves have just emerged but not swelled to full size, then cut the trees or sprouts then. Putting leaves out requires the roots to send up a lot of energy, energy which they won't get back until the leaves get full-sized. If you cut the trees and sprouts just at the leaf-emergence stage several times, you will eventually defeat those roots. But don't let the leaves get to full-sized again, or you'll be giving the roots a recharge of energy.

Round-up and/or fire.

Hack down sprouts, spray Round-Up on them, repeat as necessary.

Or dig until stub is uncovered, soak in some accelerate, burn for a while, cover for the night, burn again until stump almost is almost completely gone.
The original RoundUp works great on herbaceous plants (soft green stemmed plants like perennials, annuals, etc.), but not on woody plants like trees & shrubs. Try the new RoundupĀ® Poison Ivy & Tough Brush Killer or Ortho Brush-B-Gon. This stuff is designed to kill trees, roots and all. Here are the web sites:

I had many sprouts coming up after my popular was gone. I sprayed the new sprouts with round-up almost every day until they were all gone. It took almost the entire summer to get rid of all of them. It must have done the job since I have had no more sprouts this year.
