Young sunflower sprout.?
Question:I am growing a small black oil sunflower plant just for fun, and its been about a week. It is doing extremely well, but the stem is starting to curve in different directions. I am already changing the way the sunflower faces the sun to straighten the stem, but it doesn't seem to be working today. The stem is about 2 and a half inches with two baby leaves. So, any ideas? Should I try to support it with a toothpick, or is it too early?
Answers:
You don't need to support it at all. A sunflower will grow a thick stalk to support it's self as it gets older. Just keep turning it towards the sunlight and it will do just fine. Make sure you let the soil dry out somewhat in between waterings. Keep up the good work and it will grow beautiful.

yes o need to support it .but u need something bigger.do u rember the package witth the seeds? did it say how high the flower would grow ? if u rember then place a stick about 2" away from the plant an tie it every tim u c it starting to sag
Are you growing indoors or out? With plenty of sun, that is, if it's outdoors, the stem will grow just fine without any support. You don't need to change anything--sunflowers will find the sun and face it every time.
While you're at, take a handful of seed and through it in your garden or lawn. What the squirrels and birds don't get will grow up into a patch of sunflower plants with beautiful flowers. Then in the fall, you'll have living bird feeders.
