Answers:
that is the only way they can look they believe they are smarter than you
years back when I started sending my wife for parts, i told her if anyone ask to help her to tell them no
did you hear me
yes you need to keep it off ground someway,,tie a rope to it and hang it on the rail

a stake is a piece of wood drove in ground
a trellis is a combination of stakes and cross pieces
a cage is round
I am putting mine on cattle panels this year,,,that would probably be illegal in the depo book

Trellis is right.
Vines
a cage
You usally can find the wire enclosures are Home Depot or Lowes in the garden section to stake them. The cage slips over the plant giving it something to grab onto as it vines.
Tomatoe plants can be tied to anything , bamboo canes or even course string if its ancored top and bottom , then there are fancy frames costing more than the tomatoes
Tomato cage.
Tomatoes will grow on the ground if you have the space to roam and tangle. Ask for a tomato cage. Lately these are circular frames with 3 or 4 rings that are wide at the top. It has 3 straight rods which go into the soil. Print the following and return to the high school clerk:

With only a 12" pot it will become top-heavy and tip over when fully grown. Place a heavy stone or brick inside. I would use a slightly larger pot with a wider base.5 gal pail?

.
They're called tomato cages. They keep the tomato plants from escaping and running away. :)
Tomato plants can be staked with a single stake if the side shoots are removed, this type of plant will give the largest fruit. If side shoots are left in place, the plant will be more bushy and will produce more fruit but indivdual fruit will be smaller, this type of plant can be tied to a trellis or contained in a wire cage, there are cages sold specifically for tomatoes.
