Small farm - extra income?
Question:I have about 4 acres of farm land, and I was wondering if there was anything inexpensive (doesn't require a tractor, combine, etc) that I could do to earn a little extra income. I've thought of raising a few head of cattle or possibly growing vegetables of some sort, but I'm not really sure what would be the best. Any ideas?
Answers:
Your extra income might come in the form of a reduced food bill if you buy a tiller and raise a nice garden. The addition of a small poultry house will give you eggs and meat (if you can handle the killing part-I can't!), plus you can sell extra eggs. A small vegetable stand might bring in quite a bit of money, especially if you use organic methods. On four acres you could raise enough vegetables, poultry and grains to feed your family for a year if you educate yourself on gardening and poultry care, you could even add goats or other types of meat/milk animals for your own use and for sale.
yes grow pumpkins or tomato's, let the people pick their own and then you charge them for it
Don't know where you are located, but I know that in some areas, boarding a horse for someone can bring in an income of arounf $500 a month. All you need is about 2 acres of fenced in property and a small shed for shelter. The owner usually does the grooming and maintenance of the horse and the property owner would maintain the fence and watch out for the general safety of the animal.
How about chickens.
With not knowing where you live, it is difficult to know what bylaws you have in what you can or cannot do. But I will suggest a few ideas:
You can grow different herbs, vegetables, hay.
Fruit U-pick
But a small tractor, rototiller, etc. would help in maintaining the land.
