What is the best way to replace grass in the backyard?
Question:our backyard grass doesn't look good, with several types of weeds and other taller plants growing out of it. we want to put in new grass, would putting seeds or rolling out those grass rolls be best? i have no experience with these types of yardwork, just want to help the folks do theirs. any helpful advice is appreciated.

Since this is Summer, it's not a good time for planting grass, either by seed or sod. Do it in the Fall. In the meantime, cut the lawn then use a good weed 'n feed like Scott's. Follow the directions to the letter. With all the weeds you describe, sounds as if the lawn has been neglected. But if you follow the feeding regimen, all you'll have to do in the fall is spread seed.
Good Luck
If it it is fenced in just put a couple of energetic dogs in the backyard and you will not have anything growing there. As for starting to grow a genuine green grass lawn with the dogs out there-------------------P.S. I have a backyard with two dogs and no lawn. It is easier to pooper scoop in the sand than in the grass anyway. Good luck!
Wait until fall to do anything with the area. First spray the area with round up to kill everything. After it has all died have it tilled up good and get it graded off nice. I personally would lay sod for a couple of reasons. First of all you have an instant lawn. The second reason is you don't have to worry about rain washing your soil and seed around. You have to water seed as much as you do sod because the seed needs to stay moist to germinate. Seed ends up being more work but it is less expensive.
Call a fertilizer company and get a weed & feed application. Then, in the fall you'll want to do an aeration and some seeding. Aeration pokes holes in the yard, you can rent this machine from any rental store. Spread the seed and you'll be amazed in the Spring!
Do it clump by clump, I think Azoya grass is hardest...
