Medallion Fescue Grass?
Question:we are looking to have new SOD and grass put it, and the landscaper guy said Medallion Fescue is really good grass but it's expensive. Does anyone know anything about this type of grass? or if it is expensive? Thanks.
Answers:
It is a high priced sod when compared to the prices that I pay here in the Chicago area as a landscape contractor. These may be normal prices for your area.

The best way I know to understand a turfgrass's quality and performance is to look at the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) results. NTEP is a cooperative effort between the non-profit National Turfgrass Federation, Inc., and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). NTEP is headquartered at the Beltsville Agricultural Center (BARC) in Beltsville, Maryland USA.
I like to use a sod that lists its named cultivars. This is a sign of a quality sod. Pacific Sod (the grower) indicates that Medallion is "100% IMPROVED TALL FESCUES", but they do not list the named cultivars that make up Medallion sod. Without the names of the fescue cultivars used, you can not use the NTEP results to determine quality or suitablilty to your area. You must instead relay upon the recommendations of friends or trust your landscape contractor's recommendation. This also means that the grower can change the makeup of Medallion as they see fit and quality may not be consistant from one crop to the next. The claims that this grass is really good may be accurate, but I could not confirm this through the independent testing of NTEP. Ask your contractor for the independant NTEP results on Medallion that back his claims. His answer may provide you with more insights than just the quality of Medallion sod. You just might learn something about the quality of your contractor!

I work for a landscape contractor in California and we install Medallion tall fescue from Pacific Sod almost exclusively. I don't think it is expensive; we wouldn't spend more than we had to! It is what grows best here, and we don't have a lot of call backs with it as long as it is maintained correctly.
