I have starlings swarming the neighbourhood, are they gathering for something? Can i deter them somehow?

Question:

Answers:
Starlings will be breeding again. Make sure your eves on your house are closed up. They love to nest in the holes of your home, garage, and shed. There needs to be an open season on the things for b b hunters.

Put up flashing ribbon in your trees and bushes. It doesn't take much, to scare them away.

Most home and garden stores have some in supply.
Put a plastic owl, like the kind they sell at home-and-garden stores, on the end of a long, wooden dowel-rod, and stick it in the ground around any plants you don't want the Starlings bothering. They'll rush away in a terrible fright at the sight of an owl!
