It's hard to say without more description or even an area of the country. There are dozens, probably hundreds or even thousands of insects that are brown and fly.
That said, it either sounds like a heavy gnat infestation or midge flies -- both are fairly small (mosquito or smaller) flying insects that are brown and occur in great numbers. The gnats vary on what they eat, but some feed on fungus, others on fruits, and others on organic materials anywhere -- and it's the larvae that feed, not the adults.
Midge flies grow up in clean fresh water -- a good indication of a healthy water supply nearby. If you want to get rid of them (temporarily), I'd suggest spraying the lawn with one of those insect-killing sprays you connect to your garden hose. THey work pretty well, but kill indiscriminately, so I wouldn't recommend them until last resort. There are lots of good insects out there, and even these guys have there place.
Best of luck -- hope it helps!
