What grows well in Salt Lake City?

Question:I checked sunset magazine and it said that SLC is in zone 1+2.. but, I dont really know what that means. We are moving to SLC from Washington state, and I know what to grow here, from watching my mom grow beautiful gardens for years, but I have no idea if any of those plants will be able to grow in the high desert. The average high temp is 89, average low is 27, and humidity is pretty low...
I know I can grow some kinds of clumping bamboo, thats all I have been able to find so far. any help would be appriciated!

Answers:
You should be able to grow many type of clumping bamboos, maybe even some of the tropical clumpers.

Problem with average lows is that it is precisely that, an average. Many of the Bambusa's need temps above 23 degrees to survive, so even these may be out of the question. Probably your best bet would be some of the B. Multiplex varieties, that can take temps into the upper teens with no damage.

There are some Fargesia varieties that can take even lower temps into the negatives. F. Nitida is one such variety.

This site here has listed many bamboos that you may find suit what you are looking for!

I don't know much about Salt Lake , but here goes . When you get there , walk & drive around , & look at the plants/landscaping , with special attention paid to sites similar to yours . (esp in regards to orientation (N<S<W<E?)). Go to local garden centers , ( online too ) not the national chain/ idiot-marts. If you see a good garden , stop & ask the person responsible. Most are glad to help with advice . Lastly , if you want books, see any of Lauren Springer's. She's a good garden writer/plantswomen, with most of her experience in a high-elevation/dry location ,in Colorado ( but not just that).
