What's the best way to get grass to grow?
Question:I'm moving into a rental home and there is hardly any grass in the front yard. Any advice on a cheap way to get grass to grow? I'm in Columbia, SC. Any advice as to a good seed to plant?
Answers:
Not sure about the best grass seed for your area, but your local garden center should know.
When you put down the seed, don't just throw it on the ground. It won't do good. Some topsoil would be ideal, but it costs money. To save money, and have a chance, take an iron rake, and scratch up the soil, this will give the grass roots something to grab onto. Without doing that, very few seeds will sprout.
After putting down the seed, water it daily if possible, but only in the early morning or late evening, as the hot sun evaporates the water too quickly.
Good luck in your new home!
Your local garden center should be able to point you in the right direction. They can tell you what types of grass are indigenous to SC. Seed is the cheapest way. Sod is more expensive and it is a rent house.
Perhaps the owner will compensate you for improving the lawn, just as many will if you paint, and make other improvements.
We are in California in the desert it reaches like 115 some days. I put seed down and it looks pretty decent in the areas I put it (just did a touch up). All I did was the areas I put the seed, I raked it to loosen up the dirt ,wet it put the seed down and put soil over the top so the birds did not try to eat it and then at night we water our grass so it has time to soak in.
I've been using Miracle Gro Lawn Food for 7 years and it is the best. After you see some growth, feed the lawn with it. It greens and thickens. I usually use it 3x during the summer months, and people always compliment me on my lawn. Good Luck. I also like to use some peat moss when planting the grass. Seems to grow faster.
