Head lettuce wont head up what can I do?
Question:Not much of a garden person but I tried head lettuce several years and no heads
Answers:
Head lettuce is more complicated to grow than leaf lettuces. In most parts of the U.S., it is too hot in the summer to get a good crop of head lettuce. It needs fertile soil with a lot of organic matter such as compost, plenty of water, and cooler temperatures. As soon as the temperatures get hotter than the low 70s, it starts to bolt to seed, and it won't form a head.
Although leaf lettuce isn't as crunchy, it's quicker and easier to grow, has more vitamins than iceberg lettuce, and comes in different colors, which can be very interesting in the salad bowl. Even leaf lettuces, though, don't do well in the heat of the summer.
never tied to grow head lettuce, but I seem to remember reading that a sprinkle of salt will cause the heads to form
