When do you know when to pull your potatoe plant to check for potatoes?
Question:
Answers:
I never pull any to check on the potatoes! That ruins that plant and any potential potatoes if they are not ready. I look first for cracks around the base of the plant, that shows there is tuber growth. Then I just dig with my hands around the base, to look at the size of the potatoes--and will gather "new potatoes" this way to fix by pulling small golf ball sized ones off of different plants.
You should look at "pulling" the plants when the plant itself is blooming, and or starting to turn yellow and begin dying. Then dig with a shovel away from the plan t to loosen the soil so you can dig up the tubers. Just pulling the stem may result in you having a stem in your hand, as they tend to break off at ground level if you don't do anything to loosen the soil.
anytime now should be fine, just pull 1 or 2 and check, ive already pulled mine and they were perfect size for what i wanted, it all depends on what size you want them , just pull a few and check
after the flower is no longer thier
When the plants flower you can search for potaoes. This depends on where you live - in my Lower MIchigan garden I estimate an few more weeks before I see flowers.
After they are done blooming. Dont pull the plant just dig under & see what you have. Then you can decide if you want to pull the plant . You can even just dig some of the potatoes & leave the plant to grow more.
