I'm too cheap to pay for terracing materials. Any free or inexpensive suggestions?

Sometimes if you check on Craigslist people have gotten too much of material like that and will give it to you if you pick it up.

try using twine you will need to anchor it so you will need to buy a couple of stakes then just wrap twine around the stakes then tye loosely to the twine trellis until the plant grows around it.
If you live near a rocky beach, go & collect as many stones as you can carry in your car & use treated 2x4's or railroad ties for framing. Crushed seashells can also be used & work well.
One oddly attractive material that doesn't get much attention is old wine bottles. This would be for shallow terraces, of course, or raised beds. We got a lot of bottles from restaurants and set them upside down in the dirt, one next to another, to make a glass wall. It really looks interesting, especially since the bottles are different colors. I've even been thinking that if we left them with their openings up, the wind could make musical tones, but then we'd probably just end up catching all the bees in the neighborhood (not to mention dirt, water, and whatever other dreck is small enough to fit the bottle necks). Nah, upside down is best.
