Stump removal?
Question:I just recently had a tree taken out due to lighting, what can I use to take out the stump with out chemicals and with out using a grindder. I hear salt would work on it over time. Any suggestions?
Answers:
If your not in a hurry and want to do something a little different and fun, inoculate it with gourmet mushrooms. After 3-4 yrs. of producing, the stump becomes a pile of compost. I leave my stumps about 24" tall and garden around it to shade the stump and help keep the area moist. You can get the kits from "The Mushroompeople" or "Fungi Perfecti". RScott
Cut it as close to the ground as you can and then drill dime size holes about 6 inches deep in the stump.
FYI, salt is a chemical. If you don't want to dig them up or grind them, Do what I'm doing. I cut some trees down and cut the stumps as close to the ground as I could. I'm just going to cover them with soil and make an island out of them.

Good Luck and Happy Gardening from Cathy and Neal!
we went through this a few years ago. we drilled holes into the stump and bought this stuff called stump out. every time we used our charcoal grill we put the hot coals on the stump and burned it out. as it started to get burned away my husband took the Axe to it to help it along. it took all summer but it is gone. they charge 75.00 a foot to grind them out so it was definitely a cost savings
