Harvesting Carnation Seeds?
Question:I would really like to harvest some seeds from my carnation plants. How would I go about doing that?
Answers:
Here's what I do...as the flower begins to dry and wilt I cut it down from the stem and place them in a shoe box to dry out. Once they have dried completely I tap the head of the flower on the side of the shoe box and the seeds fall into there. Most of the seeds fall right out, others I may have to play with a little. I have been doing this for about 3 years now with a variety of seeds.
Good Luck
Wwhen they are ready the seed casing will be dry and the seed will fall out cleanly when crushed between the fingers onto paper. Leave on the plant until fully ripe, most seed capsules open at tip when seed is ready. DRY is the secret, watch seed heads turn from green to brown, and when DRY, harvest them. I plant them as soon as I have harvested them, in a cold frame, very sparing water, will flower next year.
