Holy crap! A lawn in So. Cal??! Is it not entirely covered in concrete yet??
Relax pal, I'm from L.A. myself, I moved away from there about 3 years ago, got tired of it. Anyway, if your income allows, put down sod and take care of it until the roots take ground. If you're just trying to make it look better without pouring all that money it's gonna cost you to lay sod, try some.uh...nope, can't find it. There's this seed in a jar, yes, a jar, that can be spread anywhere, even concrete and grown on top of it.
Each individual seed is coated with a sort of cocoon and it contains all the necessary ingredients, except water, to grow. So your soil doesn't matter. I'll make it a point to look it up and post on here bud, when I find it. It's being plastered all over T.V. right now in the S. Eastern U.S where I live. Are you seeing it out there? Anyway. I'll get back to you if you can't find it on your own.

It is probably too late to start a lawn from seed in So. Cal. (Too hot!). I live in No. Cal and I wouldn't start one now!! The BEST time to start lawns from seed is early spring or fall.

However, if you REALLY want a nice lawn, you have some work to do FIRST!! Namely, get rid of the crab grass! Because crab grass multiplies by both seed and roots (stolons), it is not an easy task. You need to first start by killing the lawn/crab grass that you now have. Then dig up all the roots. Then water well. Repeat until no new shoots come up!! It will probably take up several months to get rid of the crab grass!! By that time it will be good weather for starting a seed lawn!!

BTW, if you are thinking of laying sod, you will need to all of the above to remove the crab grass before you can lay sod!!

Good Luck!!
You gotta get rid of the crab grass first, then seed, cover with straw and water, water, water. You'll get rid of the straw when yu start mowing regularly.
