HELP! What is the best way to keep geese off my lawn?
Question:My back yard is on a small pond, and this time of the year, the geese are everywhere!! (not to mention their droppings!) They really don't seem to be afraid of anything! Outside of a BB gun, what can I do?
Answers:
Ideal habitat for geese is water with adjacent open areas of short grass. They love the short grass because it provides them with security. Short grass areas allow geese the time to see their predators and escape to the water or air. If you modify the habitat, you can make the area feel unsafe for a goose. Plant a stand of ornamental or naive grasses on your property near the area the geese populate. Preferably use tall grass plants like Silver Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis), Moor Grass (Molina litoralis) or even Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis). Geese hate the tall grasses because they can't see their natural predators. It makes them nervous. They will move on to safer areas of the lake (your neighbor's lawn).
Get a dog! My dog loves chasing them away. That, or some neighbors put up a small fence of chicken wire around their portion of the pond. Sounds unsightly but you hardly notice it and it keeps the geese away.
They have the cutest faces, don't they?
