Here are three different things to try. 1) go to the barber shop and ask for some hair clippings. They may look at you funny, but they will usually give you a bag full. Stuff wads of the hair in their burrows. They will eat through it and the hair will stop up their intestines and kill them. 2) Get one of those pump sprayers with a wand spray end like for spraying weed killer and such stuff. You can get them at nurseries/garden centers, Home Depot, Lowes, OSH, and other such places. Fill it with unscented ammonia. Shove the wand down their hole as far as you can and spray lots of the ammonia in every burrow entrance. It will make it smell really bad in their burrows and they will move out if it doesn't kill them first. 3) Undiluted Lysol cleaner is supposed to be a good gopher repellent, too. Spray it down the burrows as in #2 with a wand sprayer. 4) Put some Wrigley's Doublemint, Spearmint, or JuicyFruit gum in their burrows being careful not to touch the gum and leave your scent on it. The gum will do the same thing as the hair...stop up their intestines and kill them. 5) get one or more cats that like to hunt (some cats are lazy). A cat won't get them all, but will reduce the numbers and the survivors will seriously consider moving to safer locales. This option is best used in conjunction with other non-poison remedies like the ones mentioned above. (You don't want the cat to be eating a poisoned gopher.)

Always wear gloves when you apply any gopher remedy so your scent doesn't get on what you want the little devil to eat

do you want to kill them all i have to say is peta,
Put Juicy Fruit gum in the holes they make. The smell drives them nuts and they wont come back. Good Luck!
Gophers don't like soggy ground. If you're able to soak the area thoroughly and keep it that way for a while, they'll go elsewhere.
There are devices you can put into the ground that emit high-frequency waves that annoy and repel rodents. Here's just one of the sites from which you can purchase them:http://www.getridofgophers.com/how-to-ge...
mouse or rat traps
Chlorine tabs. Go to your local pool store and get a bottle of chlorine tabs. Take a few tabs shove it down the hole, then likewise with all the open holes you can find. Add a little water and voile. As the chlorine tabs deteriorate they will create a gas that will irradicate those varmits. No worries.
Peppermint oil on cottom balls (you could also add cayenne pepper) dropped into the gopher hole. They are allergic to it and will leabe your property.

Hominy grits or any instant grain down the hole will act as a stomach irritant.

Leave some eggs out of the refrigerator for 2 3 weeks and place the rotten eggs in the hole.

Vitamin D3 is upsets calcium metabolism in burrowing animals and will eventually kill them. (I try other methods, as I don't like killing them)

Another one that will kill gophers or moles is non-filter cigarettes. Nicotine is a poison. Drop shredded cigarettes down their hole.

Mix one cup of castor oil and 3 tablespoons of ivory liquid soap in 1 gallon of water. Poor some down every hole. Apply early in the morning of a real hot day for best results.

Rotting fish down the hole.

Place a pinwheel on a stick at the hole opening. Gophers are very sensitive to ground vibrations.

You said he outsmarts the trap now? I use the Have-A-Heart trap. There is a common weed called a Plantain weed gophers absolutely LOVE. It has NEVER failed me or my friends in luring the gopher in the trap.
