This is a complicated and involved answer, so I will refer you to an excellent site that takes it step by step. With pics.

What size is pond? I can help you build one, but I don't know how many gallons the pond is, in order to pick a 5 gallon bucket as opposed to a a blue plastic drum. You will need a water pump, size? , a roll of filter media, bio balls, UV sterilizer. Put the water pump on the bottom, then a piece of hard plastic mesh with a hole cut out in the center, then a layer of bio balls about 3 or 4 inches high, another piece of hard plastic mesh with a hole cut in the center of that, then last a layer of filter media( looks like a big ball of cotton) make sure that's about 2 or 3 inches thick. Run your intake tube from the water pump out of the bottom of your bucket through a tight fit hole you cut to fit the exact size of the tube, put a thick bead of silicon around it to seal it then out the top of the filter you run a -out -hose into your UV sterilizer, and you can submerse your filter under water so you can't see it, Uv you'll have to cut tubing long enough so you don't submerse that but you can hide that in some sort of landscaping. Hope this helps!!
