Do hydrangea's like full sun?

Question:I live on the west coast & am unsure where the hydrangea will do the best.

Answers:
Hydrangea arborescens - Smooth Hydrangea (Annabelle type): Prefers partial shade, will do well in full sun with adequate moisture though it may look wilted if exposed to late afternoon/hot sun.
Zones 4-9

Hydrangea macrophylla - Big Leaf Hydrangea (Nikko Blue type): full sun or partial shade, shade imperative in zones 7-9. moisture is necessary or plants will wilt & die.
Zone 6-9

Hydrangea paniculata - Panicle Hydrangea (Tardiva, Unique type): Sun or part shade; moist well drained soils. Will take more sun than an Annabelle or Nikko Blue type & not wilt.
Zone 3-8

Hydrangea quercifolia - Oakleaf Hydrangea: Sun or part shade; moist, fertile soils. Tender in zone 5 the first year until established.
Zone 5-9

There are lots of different kinds of hydrangeas. How much sun it likes depends on the kind that it is.

Oakleaf Hydrangeas will tolerate more sun than most. Lots of the macrophyllia hydrangeas (like the endless summer, annabelle, and other "traditional" ones) like part sun, and some shade from the really hot afternoon sun. Still other kinds prefer mostly shade.
"Cat" has given you a great answer...I only want to add that you may want to check with a local nursery on which varieties grow best in your area...in my "neck of the woods", coastal NC, they seem to do best in shade.and certain varieties just will not grow well in our sandy soil, no matter what kind of sun they get...
Also Hydrangeas will change colar depending on the type of soil.I had a blue one and one year its flowers were green LOL! If you want a diffrent colar flower put lime around it.
Sorry i cant spell LOL!
