All the branches on my Japanese maple appear to be dead. It has leaves on the two main trunks. What to do?
Question:It looks like a bush. I have yet to prune the dead branches. Should I cut of the branches and limbs?
Answers:
scratch the bark with your thumbnail. if the inner bark is green, yellow, or brown that part of the plant is alive and should not be pruned. if the inner bark is gray or white that is dead wood. double-check by snapping a twig. thin out the dead by pruning back to the lower node or branch.

Good luck!!
well, i had the same problem. i trimmed everything off except the trunks and branches with leaves. i think you should do the same. good luck=).
prune them now to give the maple time to recover before this winter! good luck. if u was wondering, it's not that u did anything wrong... it sounds as if u were hit by that late, late freeze we had this year. most of my shrubs are just now starting to show signs of recovery... it was so bad here in Eastern KY that it killed two of my Rose of Sharons!
