Part To Full Shade Plants?
Question:What are your favorite partial to full shade plants? I am looking for ones that will do well as a potted plant outside in a very shady spot.
Answers:
I have a shady house, so I understand. Azaleas are awesome. They prefer part-shade and get these iredecent flowers. Camellias are stunning. They have very dark green glossy foliage and beautiful white flowers (wedding types) with a gorgeous scent. Poinciana has vibrant red and green foliage. I think the layman's term is something to do with ..'chrismtas bush' or something like that. Rainforest plants are great. Rubber plant does awesome in full shade. Clivia has dark green strap like foliage and orange flowers; Daphne odora has snap dragon like white flowers; Orchids in pots are great because you can bring them inside and begonias. These are my favourites and there are some more in the link below. Hope this helps.
a "fernleaf bleeding heart" looks really good in shade! it comes up early in the spring too which is a great relief to the winter blues!
Impatiens or fuchsias both are colorfull and do well in pots and shady spots.
Hosta and impatiens are my favorites. They are very low maintenance, last all summer, and impatiens come in a variety of colors
Begonias
inpatients
fuschia
Gerber daisies
Shasta daisies
mini carnations
petunias ( mine do well in full sun or shade)
columbine
snap dragons
these are what i have out on my deck! good luck!
impatiens for nearly all summer flowers, hostas also
These will vary according to your location!
There are many more perennials than annuals that like the shade. Hostas (perennial) are a great foliage plant. They blend well with other flowering plants. Try some annual begonias and/or impatiens. They flower well in the shade and they bloom throughout the summer. If you're looking for some spring flowers, primroses and lily of the valley love the shade. Lily of the valley is also fragrant. Primrose comes in both an annual and a perennial form. Creeping jenny moneywort and periwinkle (vinca) are nice trailing over the edge of containers. I have all these plants in my shady garden and they perform quite well. They also do nicely in pots.
