Do you need to concrete/cement posts into ground when putting up a fence?

Question:i had a fence put up but my neighbours are now telling me it should have been concreted in to the ground. have i been ripped off? the gardener says it does not

Answers:
I'd say you got ripped off big time. A good wind pounding at your fence off & on for a couple of years & it won't be stable at all if doesn't just fall down all together.
Make them come back & do it right.

NO,NO,NO,NO. Sounds you have great neighbours.
The corner post at least should have been in cement. You need the strength so the fence will not be so easy to lean over.
When the dirt gets soft through rain it will loosen up the poles and they will lean and become unstable.I would call up who ever put up fence and have them correct this.
Unless he used metal post spikes he should have concreted the posts in to the ground, without one or the other, first gust of wind is likely to blow it over.
That depends on the type of fence. Chain link: good idea wrought iron: good idea cedar post: bad idea
You'll have to weigh how well the soil holds the weight of a picket style fence supported by two by twos or fours. (This type won't last longer thaan a decade anyway).
A picket fence supported by small diameter posts should not need cement. If you have trouble with children climbing or soggy loose soil try planting your longer wood posts deeper before turning to cement.

Consider how soon you may have to change aged fencing.
Digging up the cement to replace rotted or rusted fencing after two years is a wasted effort against cementing fence material that will last fifty years.

Basically, metal fence; cement
wood fence; no cement
More importantly is what does the local building code say? I know where i live, you have to be permited and inspected as to proper depth of the hole's as well as type of treated lumber your using for the posts! needless to say NO fencing at my place untill i win the lotto! Rob
