What tops starter trees from growing?
Question:I have an older home that was unkept for several years. We have a lot of starter trees . After cutting off the leaf growth what will stop them from growing back?
Answers:
By starter trees, I assume you mean trees you just planted? The most important thing is proper soil preparation. The hole should be twice the width and depth of the tree's root ball, to allow room for the roots to grow. Water regularly, but don't drown the young tree. Fertilizing will help it get established, but overfertilizing can burn the roots. Not sure why you would cut off the leaves. These are what feed the roots and allow the tree to grow. That alone might stop it from growing back, along with poor soil preparation, too little or too much water, and too little or too much fertilizer.
If you want to kill the upstarts, you need to clip the roots so they can't try to regrow/regenerate. You can also try to cover them with heavy mulch for a season to smother them.
