Trunk on palm?

Question:how long does it take for a pygmy date palm to develop a trunk? i hav one and hav had it for about a year now and it has about 12 or so shoots coming from its base..its a house plant and is always putting off new fronds.and it seems to hav one main 'trunk" in the middle.and it it gorgeous, nice and full, but should i create a main trunk and rid of the rest?
