Can i log on my own property?
Question:I have a lot of good trees on my property. I live in the state of New York. I want to do some logging on my property. Do i need some kind of license to do so? Many people and companies want to buy logs from my land. Anyone have any advice or information?
Answers:
My husband did logging for many yrs. in NY.
If loggers are approaching you to log your property, Then you've got some valuable timber..My advice is to get a forester in there to tell you what kind and how much timber you have. He will mark the trees and tell you how much money to expect from the logger. Then all you have to do is decide which company to use. Then expect a check from them up front. Ask them what kind of mess they will leave in the woods... or if they do a cleanup.do they take the firewood? (tree limbs...board foot Timber is in the trunks) if you do it yourself KNOW where your boundary lines are and if there is any question...leave it alone!...Timber theft is a BIG DEAL!.
no license is needed that i know of. but check with your local township.
My advice is log, log log. If you don't cut them and enjoy the money. A storm will bring them down anyway. New York is very Liberal (Greenpeace and all that). So Check at the State level. Otherwise Hillary will nail you. Why don't you have three companies give bids on the trees , and choose the highest. You will have to sell the logs to one of them anyway, and they will have the advantage then.
If you are sure the trees are on your property then yes you can. You should check with the conservation dept. to make sure you are not removing any "protected trees". As far as selling them, you can also do that. My suggestion to that is to look inthe phone book or online and get a "logger/tree expert" to give you an idea of which ones are REALLY valuable-such as the black walnut tree. Hope this helps.
