How do I plant a Redwood tree?

Question:I have a big redwood in my backyard and want to start another one. How should I do it? Plant a seed in a cup and keep in my greenhouse window? Cut a branch off and plant it in the ground? There are some green "spouts" coming from the root base at the bottom of the trunk, will those work?

You can propagate Coast Redwood via root cuttings or seed. Root cuttings are usually collected in March. Cones are collected in September & October. You need to dry the cones for 10-14 days at 70-75 degrees F, or 24 hours @ 120 degrees F before you remove the seeds. Seperate seeds from dried cone material. Coat Redwood seeds are short lived. Their seeds do not need stratification, so you can sow immediately. Store in a sealed container at 26 to 30 degrees F if you are spring planting outdoors. Seeds can only be stored for up to 1 year. You can sow your seeds in a pot. They prefer moist, acidic, well drained soils, so select your potting mix accordingly.
