Are fertilizer spikes for trees worth the money?

Question:Is there anything else I can do to make my trees grow besides watering them?

Answers:
Yes, spikes help. I have several ash trees in our front yard but one nearest the house I have been fertilizing regularly. Every year I have used those spikes on that tree. Also I have used root stimulator concentrate (gallon jug from Lowes) and a miracle grow mix on the tree a few times a year.

You need to understand how a tree grows. In the winter is when the roots grow and then the next spring and summer is when the tree catches up with the roots. Thus I use the spikes and root stimulator in the late summer or early fall to help the root growth. I also water the tree if a long dry spell occurs. This tree is about a third larger than the other untreated trees.

Occasionally I do these things to the other trees too but I do not use spikes on the other trees. All the other trees I use the spikes on seem to do better then all the others. The tree spikes go on sale in the fall so it works out well that way too.

I highly recommend the spikes. I had trees that were just barely making it due to poor soil conditions and I used the spikes and in two years were better then new. A big turn around.
I have been instructed, by the Local Nursery here in MD, to put down a hand full of 10-10-10 twice a year. Once at Easter and once at halloween. Also when you plant a tree you should mix the natural soil with some Leaf Mold. 50%x50% mix. This will help ammend the soil.
I don't think it would hurt anything at all. However, you would also use Miracle Gro Soil which seems to help all plants.

I use it constantly to keep my plants well. You can purchase something called a root stimulator. Miracle Gro makes that as well, but other brands are just as effective.

Good Luck and thanks for caring for your trees.
