Why won't my stella de oro day lillies bloom?
Question:The plants have buds but won't open up.
Answers:
I am not sure where you live but mine aren't open yet either. I bet yours aren't in full sun, give them time if they have buds. I have over a hundred daylilies and the season is just starting in the north.
Are they getting enough sun? Too much water?
Need to follow the instructions for where it is the most suitable position for them, but if the soil lacks the specific nutrients they need you may need to place them there to enrich the soil. They need special minerals to flower, and if you water them too much they won't flower. They need some dry time in order to flower, no matter what the flower is, it flowers when they are dryer and water them according to their specific needs.
Also raise the pots if they are potted, to a higher level ground to absorb the sunlight better, or change their position from where they are.
if they have buds they will bloom.give them time. by budding all your conditions are right. remember, a watch pot never boils. be paitiant, they will reward you.
Not enough sun, maybe aphids? I know there is some type of bug that gets into roses that keep the buds from opening. There is a spray for that. Your problem is probably just sun.
Daylilies are considered the #1-selling perennial plant. You have made a good choice. Some suggestions:
1. Have you just planted them? Daylilies often don't bloom the same year they're planted. Be patient; next year you should have blooms.
2. Daylilies are heavy "feeders" and need nitrogen to bloom. Easiest way? I put a handful of cow manure in each hole while I'm planting. Already planted? Add cow manure to the soil and then water the plant to soak it in.
3. Daylilies need several hours of full sun to bloom.
4. Don't crowd your daylilies. Plant 8-12 inches apart. They will spread.
Good luck with your daylilies!
