Why do people seed their grass around September or October?
Question:Does it make a difference whether the grass is seeded in the spring or in the fall?
Answers:
Fall is the preferred time to overseed a cool season lawn, but in a pinch spring can provide good results. Fall is preferred because of warmer soil conditions for quick seed germination, more dependable cool days and even moisture, and less pressure from weed growth. September seeding also allows the turf to become established before the hot dry summer arrives.
Spring seeding has several disadvantages such as cold soil temperatures that slow the germination process and wet soils due to spring rains that are difficult to work. One of the main drawbacks to spring is the problem of crabgrass and other annual grasses germinating and crowding out tender young grass plants.
Spring seeding is best done in late March or very early April for best results. It may be better to error on the early side than the late side within reason. K-State Extension discourages winter or snow seeding in February due to poor germination and establishment. Grass seed can be planted anytime now when the soil can be worked.
They are putting down rye seed. This is a grass that is green when your regular grasses are dormant.
We do it because our rainy season starts about then. By mid-march or early april, we start our dry season and the watering required to get the seed to start would cost a small fortune. So by sowing the seeds in October we let nature do its job.
