What are these things falling from my tree?

Question:I think it's a maple tree...about 12 years old. We've had it for 9 years and it has never dropped these. They look like the top of an acorn nut..the rough part. They are green inside.. my dog is eating them like crazy! What are they?

Answers:
It has to be something other than a maple tree, something more like a chestnut tree or beechnut tree!

Or, it could just be simply caterpillars that look like acorn tops.

could it be LOCUS.? Are they alive.?
a picture would be helpful
how can a tree be 12 years old but you have had it only 9 years??
I don't know what is falling from your tree as you can't identify for sure what kind of tree it is.
Good Luck
Are you sure this is a maple tree? Maple tree seeds look like half of an airplane propeller and they spin like a helicopter when they fall.

What you describe sounds more like a eucalyptus seed. Are they strong-smelling like a chemical?

Are you feeding your dog enough?
Maybe acorns that haven't grown yet. We grow apples and they fall all the time. In the fall they're red, but now, they're green.
