How can one get rid of Japanese Beetles on Raspberries?
Question:I have a wonderful raspberry patch and it is producing very well but suddenly I have a lot of Japanese beetles on the plants. Does anyone know what you can use without damaging the fruit or harming yourself when you eat them.? Thank you
Answers:
DO NOT USE THE BEETLE BAGS!!!!
Yeah they work, but what they do is cause more beetles to come into the area. The scent smells good, its sweet, and your just going to bring more into the area. Plus depending on what kind of trap you use, if you use the bag, they will just chew through the bottom defeating the purpose of the trap. Plus you will put your lawn at risk of getting grubs. Just avoid the traps and overall youll be saving alot more in the long run. What you can use is what some have suggested before..Sevin works very well. If you dont want to use an insecticide, you can knock them into a bucket of soapy water. Or you can use a high pressured hose to knock them off as well.
sevin 5 dust
I hesitate to say this, but when I was a kid we had so many japanese bettles we didn't know what to do, so we kids were given glass jars with lids and in the bottom of the jar was water and some stuff like Raid in it. And we would go around knocking the flowers and dumping the beetles into the jar (and they would die in the jar)(and of course then throw it into the garbage...but I guess the Raid could still be reusable).
There is a Japanese Beetle trap available at your lawn and garden supplier. It is a plastic bag with an attractant that clips to it, be sure to hang it in the most open area of your yard away from your raspberries, I hung mine from the tree branch and put a rock or two in it so that the wind wouldn't blow it upside down. I thought it worked great, It seems to catch them before the can lay their egg and it kept my lawn from dying out too. The first time I used it, I caught about 300 or so adults which made a big difference in my yard and the neighbors.
We have had good success with the "Bag-a-bug" traps. The secret to these and any pesticides is to read the instructions. Place the traps up wind from the items that you want to protect. Use several to form a barrier. The traps use a combination of things to attract the beetles.
