if you're going to kill it, you better cut it down afterwards anyways. a dead tree is dangerous and can fall over or have branches snap off.

I have heard old wise tail of drilling many holes along the circumference at the base of the tree and then packing salt into the holes. The salt begins to absorb all the nutrients and water out of the tree causing it to dry out and rot.

How can you sleep after killing a tree, for what?. Learn to appreciate it, admire its branches, the birds and other wildlife that it attracts, the shade it provides, the sound of the wind flowing trough it. What's the reason to kill a tree?

Trees take in CO2 and give off oxygen. They keep us alive on this planet. If there's anyway to avoid cutting down the tree, try to do it. If it is dying, it will have to be cut down. I know of no other way to bring it down safely. Try to save it if you can, all of us depend on them.
Even after you kill it, it will come down one way or another. Don't listen to all the comments about killing a tree. Unless it is the only tree left in your world get rid of it if it is causing problems. (I assume it is on your property) Use it for firewood and save some money on fuel oil. BTW what type of house do all the negative commenter's live in?!!
