I'm from the east coast so I'm not sure what kinds of plants you have out there, but New Guinea's grow well in the shade.
Try Forsythia (might be Forcythia). It's real easy to grow, blooms a pretty goldenrod color in spring, and spreads like wildfire once it gets established.. It'll grow in sun, shade, hot, cold, dry, moist.. Great for those beginner landscapers like your brother. :-)

This thing.
bamboo works really well. my sissy is 3 and she is now planting a garden of bamboo in our back yard. It can grow in any climate and anywhere in the world.
Good Luck!
Hostas are easy to take care of and they do well in the shade. Your child can have fun digging up the Hosta and dividing it in the fall too. Then next year there will be multiple Hostas with almost no effort. Just water the Hostas when they show signs of sagging.
try ferns they are easy to grow you can ask any local green house for the ones that grow well in cooler climates
well, try this the lucky bamboo plant. it only needs a jar or a vase that looks like a plate, some sand. then it's not really that hard to maintain just put it on a table or on the middle of your dining table and that's it. i have an image link just click it.
green grass or clover- then she can look for her own 4 leafs!
coleus are a good choice as an annual for a beginner, lots of colors to pick from fast growing and easy to tell if they need water, they can be brought inside for winter and grown in a window as well, you can take cuttings that root easily and make more plants. If you want something that is perennial, hedera( English Ivy) might be a good choice- kind of boring but reliable and hard to kill. Coleus would keep a 5 year old interested longer.
Impatiens are compact shade plants that will bloom all summer in the northeast and then die in the winter. the flowers are a great reward for a 5 yr old because there's lots of them all the time. Plant it and at first water it alot. A little miracle grow, even for houseplants will give more flowers. even one plant will produce a good size plant full of flowers. There's alot of colors too; pink, dk pink, lavender, orange, white.
Have fun!
