We're getting ready to spray insecticide to our trees...is it safe for our dogs?
Question:Our cherry (not fruit bearing) and apple trees are getting invaded by Japanese beetles and we're going to spray "Sevin" on them. We are also putting down grub killer at the end of this month. Are any of these poisonous or harmful to my 2 dogs?
Answers:
If you are using liquid, just keep the dogs inside until it's dry. I have used grubex for years, with a dog. I've never had a problem.
From personal experience with a cat, my answer would be no, it's not safe. If possible, keep the dogs away from the trees. We had sprayed insectiside and my cat was around the area and she got very sick and had to receive iv fluids.
No, it isn't safe for your dogs. Or birds. Or humans. Or the beneficial insects hanging out around your trees. However, there are many non-toxic options. I know that for roses there are japanese beetle traps. I don't know if they would work on something larger like fruit trees, but you might check. Try Clean Air Gardening's website or call your local agricultural extension office. Many times hot vinegar water or hot water with mint oil in it will get rid of unwanted insects.
Sevin is safe to a point. It's usable ON poultry to help keep mites off of them and can be sprinkled on vegetables in the garden, however, you will need to wash anything that comes in contact with it.
To be on the safe side (or you wouldn't have asked) look into GARDEN'S ALIVE!, they carry organic products that work on fruit trees, kill grubs and nematodes and are safe to use around children and pets.
