Does anybody know of a good website about growing echinacea?
Question:I already googled echinacea and read every article on the first few pages but does anyone know of a really good site i can go to that says everything i need to know about it?
Answers:
There are many pages dedicated to the medicinal attributes, but not so many about how to grow it. I found something in the BBC gardening section: http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/pl...
Good luck!
What you are asking about is the same thing gardeners call Purple Cone Flowers. You can find lots of gardening books at your library or book store, or just look purple cone flowers on the web.
You might want to try to look up catalog seed companies and have them shipped if not local or buy the seed packets and plant them.
They look like a pink daisy except the petals point downward and the center has small woody spikes to make the ball in the center. Those are actually the seeds that self sew themselves every year to come back and spread.
My experience is that they grow abundantly and they attract butterflies and bees, they like fairly fertile soil and the soil kept moist bu not real wet. They are pretty drought resistant in some areas as long as there is partial shade. They love the sun too. I use mulch around mine as to hold in the moisture much longer and to keep the roots cooler.
When the plants go dormant for the fall weather, pinch off the flower heads (called dead heading); dry on flat dry surface and save some of the seeds to pass along to a friend or sew more plants elsewhere. It is that simple. Enjoy!! Use caution:
Remember each spike that comes out of the center is a new individual plant!
I have some growing in my cottage garden. It will grow just about anywhere. I hope these sites help you out.
