Can i lay horticultural fabric directly over a lawn?

Question:

Answers:
Sure you can, but the grass will grow up through it. If you want to cheaply and effectively get rid of the grass use 7 to 9 layers of newspaper and cover with a layer of mulch.

HOOOOOOOORTICULTURE.
Depends on what kind, but I am thinking no from mostly any h. fabric. There will be varieties suited for the lawn, but not if you just buy any fabric.
The best thing to do is cover your lawn first to kill of the grass a bit but depending on the type of cloth you are using it should block out light as that's what they are designed to do to stop weeds photosynthesising, so i don't see any reason why you couldn't put it straight onto your lawn.
good luck xxx
You can, but I would mow the grass in that area very low so the fabric will lay better. If this is something you are going to have on the ground for the longterm, get a good quality fabric. Buying the cheap stuff, like what you usually might buy at Wal-mart, is not of good quality and may tear and rip over a couple of years, then you would have to replace it. Getting some from a landscape contracter is better. What they use may have a 20 year garantee on it.
