Is it insane to plant a poisonous Angel’s trumpet (Brugmansia x candida) tree?
Question:Do you have a Brugmansia x candida (Angel’s trumpet) tree or are you an expert? Its high toxicity worries me. I'd love to plant one next to our ground floor porch in a yard of a small apartment building. (We are the only family here with young children, but they are all old enough to avoid eating parts of the tree. ) Is any less poisonous Angel's Trumpet being developed ?
Answers:
I removed an angel's trumpet from my yard several years ago. The previous owner was into exotic plants. While I find the plant interesting, I don't think it is worth the potential for trouble. Younger children may move into your area. Your children may have guest who don't understand the dangers. Teenagers (even some adults with fried brains) may steal it to make tea. Peoples pets may eat leaves from it. Shop around. There are hundreds of exotic looking plants that aren't harmful. I like a lot of the rarer gingers.
It is insane to eat Angel's Trumpet, not to plant it. But, (are you ready this is going to sound like George Bush's abstinace speech) if you want to eliminate all risk just don't plant it. (you can get pregnant if you don't have sex).
Well, you can try pollenating an Angel's trumpet with a similar, yet non-poisonous tree. See the result and try to plant one.
Absolutely not! There are many more deadly plants in nature and gardens everywhere, Monkshood, Foxglove, Hemlock, many mushrooms, Deadly Nightshade, and on and on, just Google it. Oops, sorry, it was "lollipop's" 'answer' I was responding to! RScott
