carpenter ants like to live in wood with moisture they do not eat the wood but will destroy it just the same , you most likely have an old tree in your yard this is more than likely the source , treating or getting rid of the source is your best bet if your house has any moisture problems it is only a matter of time until they reside in it as well .
you need an exterminator, because if they're in your yard they're probably in your house.Once the house is sprayed they seem to die outside too.
We have thousands of ants this year. So far, only outside. However it seems nothing I can do will get rid of them. We have had our yard exterminated. We have treated the grass with pesticides (triazicide) and we have sprayed the entire house with ant killer. It kills the ants that we spray, but not the ones who come by later.
We have found two things that have helped this year. First, we always keep the Ortho spray (big bottle) of it incase we see any large groups. We tackle them ASAP and try to follow them to their nest to kill their buddies.
Second, we removed all mulch from our flower beds. My husband thought it looked so much nicer with the mulch, so we spent tons of money on the junk. Come to find out, even though it is cedar (which is supposed to repell insects), those little ants were nesting in there by the millions.
Stay on top of the problem, and it will get better. And start early next year so they don't come back as strong. Also, if you have a crawl space under your house, set off those bug bombs under there. We did that to ensure they didn't make it into the house from underneath, and also to kill any ones who were nesting there.
Raid has a foam for killing ants.
